Living a Good Life

How do you determine what makes a “good" life?

Someone I knew peripherally died suddenly on the weekend. While I was hosting a celebration of joy and surrounded by decades of love and support, he was taking his last, unexpected breaths.

This week has been full of platitudes, with people authoritatively declaring that “he’d been nothing but kind", and “the world has lost a great man". One of the things that was repeated most often was “he lived a good life”.

What makes a “good" life? Is it something that is subject to self assessment? Or are there silent scorecards being marked throughout ones existence, ready to be tallied once a heart ceases to beat?

For me, my goal is to have more positive days than negative ones, and to bring more joy than I cause pain.

What’s your goal?
